Francesco Surdich

Born in Cherso (today Croatia) and graduated from the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Genoa (1967), with a thesis in Medieval History, he was a lecturer in Medieval History and in the History of Geographical Explorations at the University of Genoa. He has also taught History of Islamic Countries and was professor of History of explorations and geographical discoveries at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the University of Genoa, where he also taught Travel Literature and History of Travel and International Relations.

He has dealt with Historical Sciences on European Society and the Americas in the contemporary age and, in 2004, he was appointed full professor at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Genoa. At the same University he held the position of President of the Board of the degree course in History; President of the Committee for the specialist degree in Instruments and methods of historical research; Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Dean of the same Faculty, which ceased to exist on that date; director of the courses of the University of the Third Age of the University of Genoa. In 1975 he founded the Ligurian Society of Homeland History, directing it until 2017 and also curating the 42 volumes of the Miscellanea magazine of the History of Explorations.

He has been and is a member of numerous national committees, study centers, cultural associations, scientific committees (including the Institute of Culture for the East and the West, partner of the Casa degli Esploratori), which deal with historical studies -geographic and celebrations of great anniversaries.

He is a member of the scientific committee of various series and journals. He has over 270 publications, 80 reviews, articles, introductions and prefaces, as well as entries from encyclopedias and bibliographic records.
